The Ultimate Guide to Parallel Drum Compression in Home Studio

If your drum mixes sound small, weak, and get lost as soon as distorted guitars or synths come in, you're probably approaching dynamics the wrong way.
I see guys in their home studios all the time who put a compressor on the drum master bus, lower the threshold until everything is squashed by 10 dB, and wonder why the kick and snare have lost all their impact.
Physics is unforgiving: if you heavily compress a direct signal (insert), you are literally killing the transients, which are the initial and most violent part of the hit.
The engineering solution to having a huge, massive, aggressive drum kit, without losing the stick's attack on the skins, is called parallel compression .
In this guide I'll show you exactly how to build it step by step in your DAW, using a two-stage approach and three amazing free plugins from Analog Obsession , to get an analog desk sound without spending a cent.
The Concept: What is Parallel Compression?
Instead of compressing the original track, we create a separate track (a Bus or an FX Channel).
In this parallel track we send a copy of the drum signal and literally destroy it with the compressor, reducing the dynamics to an incredible extent.
Finally, let's mix (fader in hand) this "squashed" signal under the original "clean" signal.
The result? The clean signal keeps peaks and transients intact, while the parallel signal lifts up all the low-level detail, creating a rock-solid wall of sound.
Let's see the exact workflow, divided into a double processing stage.
Phase 1: The Control (KSN PAR with FETish)

The "engine" of the song, that is, the Kick and Snare, need a dedicated push to break through the mix.
Create a Send from your Kick and Snare tracks to a new parallel Auxiliary Bus and call it KSN PAR (Kick/Snare Parallel).
On this bus we insert the Analog Obsession FETish . This is an emulation of a classic Urei 1176, a transistor (FET) compressor known for its lightning-fast speed, perfect for adding a punch.
Ratio: We want aggressive control. Set a ratio of 4:1 or 8:1.
Attack and Release: The attack should be medium-slow to let the initial transient pass. The release should be fast to let the compressor recover before the next hit.
Please note: on FETish the attack and release controls are "straight" and intuitive, but remember that on classic 1176 emulations the parameters usually work the other way around (1 is slowest, 7 is fastest), so always be very careful when using other similar plugins.
Gain Reduction: Push until you hear an interesting sound, don't be afraid to go beyond 5-7 dB of gain reduction. You want to literally stun the sound.
Now the backbone of your groove has an explosive parallel track ready to mix.

Phase 2: Parallel Magic (DRUMBUS PAR with Poortec and VariMoon)
Now take the general bus where all the drums end up (kick, snare, toms, overheads, room) and create another Send to a second auxiliary Bus.
Call it DRUMBUS PAR .
On this parallel bus, the golden rule is: EQ before you compress .
1. Lighten with Poortec

First up is the Analog Obsession Pultec (emulation of the legendary Pultec EQP-1A tube equalizer).
Why do we EQ first? Because we want to tell the compressor that comes after to react more to certain frequencies, and we want the parallel signal we'll add below the mix to be bright and exciting.
Use the Poortec's high-end range (e.g., 8kHz, 10kHz, or 16kHz) and turn up the Boost generously. This greatly brightens the attack of the snare, cymbals, and overall air, adding three-dimensionality.
You can also give a slight boost to the 60 Hz range to fatten up the bottom end of the kick. Sometimes, however, you may need to tone down the lows: it depends a lot on the starting sound of your drumkit. Always listen to what happens.
2. Destroy with the VariMoon

Right after the Poortec, we insert the Analog Obsession VariMoon (emulation of the monstrous Fairchild 660, a Variable-Mu tube compressor).
This is the time to overdo it.
The VariMoon isn't as fast as the FETish, but it has a super smooth compression curve and adds tons of tube saturation (harmonics) when pushed.
Settings: Lower the threshold (or raise the input) until the needle bends dramatically. Don't be afraid to see -10 or -15 dB of gain reduction.
Time Constant: Use a fast time constant, such as number 1 or 2.
The sound: If you solo this parallel bus, it will sound pumped, distorted, dark on the lows but sparkling on the highs (thanks to the Poortec), with infinite sustain on the drums and cymbals. It's exactly what we want.
Phase 3: The Blend (Mixing the signals)

Remove Solo from the parallel busses and set the KSN PAR and DRUMBUS PAR faders to zero (minus infinity).
Now play the song with all the instruments (don't listen to the drums in isolation, it's useless).
Start slowly raising the KSN PAR fader. You'll feel the kick and snare take on an incredible weight and bite in the center of the mix.
Next, slowly raise the DRUMBUS PAR . At this point, the entire kit will begin to "swell." The drums will become enormous and the cymbal tail will become dense, while the transients from the original track will continue to mercilessly pierce the mix.
Stop when the effect is present and provides cohesion, but does not overwhelm the original attack.
Mind the Phase: If you hear the drums hollowing out in the bass or sounding tinny when you raise the parallel faders, your DAW isn't compensating for the plugin delay properly (Plugin Delay Compensation). Check your latency settings!
