NAM vs. Real Amplifiers: Pros and Cons


Let's be honest: putting on headphones in your bedroom is never going to be the same as having an AC30 blasting at court-ordered volume behind your back. But what about in a mixing context? Let's analyze the situation objectively.


THE PROS:


  • Real Dynamics: Unlike old, plasticky simulations, NAM responds incredibly well to the interaction between the guitar's impedance/volume and the circuitry. If you're playing a distorted profile and turn down the volume pot on your instrument, the signal progressively cleans up while keeping the frequencies intact, exactly as a real tube stage would behave.


  • It's Free and Unlimited: The software is free, and the online communities are huge. Portals like Tone3000 and similar sites offer tens of thousands of free, high-quality captures of every amp, pedal, and preamp on the face of the earth.


  • Zero Acoustic Problems and No Feedback: Recording in DI (Direct Injection) completely eliminates the classic nightmares of home recording. If you're not recording with multiple mics at once, you don't have to go crazy trying to find the perfect phase, you don't have to fight with terrible room acoustics, you don't catch drum feedback, and you can play at 3 a.m. with headphones without getting kicked out.


THE CONS:


  • It's a Static "Photograph": When you use a NAM capture, you get the sound of that amplifier with the knobs set to exactly that position during capture. NAM has a built-in equalizer, but to drastically change the gain or EQ, you're usually quicker to load another profile.


  • The Importance of the Cabinet: Many NAM profiles capture only the head (Amp Only). To get it to sound like a club, you also need to load an IR (Impulse Response), which is the profile of the cabinet and the microphone. Get the IR wrong, and a great profile will sound like a broken radio. Fortunately, sources like ToneHunt and Tone3000 are also chock-full of dedicated cabinet profiles, or you can go straight for "Full Rig" captures (head and cab all in one).

The machine learning algorithm requires processing power, but the algorithm's recent evolution (Architecture 2) has greatly optimized CPU consumption. Furthermore, if you freeze or bounce guitar tracks in your DAW once you've found the right sound, the CPU consumption drops to zero.


3. What sound card do I need to use NAM?


The secret to a good virtual sound is not (just) the plugin, it's the input! You need a sound card with a Hi-Z (Instrument) input, coupled with a good preamplifier and quality converters (A/D) .


If the card converts poorly, the sound will enter the software already "plasticky" and devoid of transients.

If you've never used this system before and the idea of downloading files and profiles is confusing, here's a quick procedure to get your first amazing sound ready in your DAW.


Please note: NAM has recently updated to the very powerful Architecture 2 (A2) and the official plugin for loading sounds is now called Gateway .

Step 2: Retrieve Sounds (Profiles and IRs) Gateway is shipped empty. To make it play, we need to provide it with an amplifier (and often a speaker).


  1. Go to a portal like Tone3000 .


  2. Find an amplifier you like (e.g., "Vox AC30"). Download the profile file; it will have the extension .nam .

Step 3: Load and Play in Your DAW Open your DAW, create a mono audio track, and insert Gateway . Connect your guitar to the Hi-Z input on your sound card.


The Gateway interface is simple and divided into sections:


  • Click on the top bar to load the amplifier profile (the .nam file).


  • If you need it, go to the Cab/IR section below and load the kick drum impulse (the .wav file).


  • Play your guitar and adjust the Input Gain. Make sure the input signal is healthy and not clipping digitally before the plugin. Done. You're ready to record.
