In recent months, I updated the Room B setup at VDSS Studio by introducing the Universal Audio Apollo x8 Gen 2. Having become the nerve center of the room, it naturally took its place as the main interface I take with me on every trip for live events.
In this article, I'll show you how the new features introduced by the second generation have solved several practical problems in my workflow, how to exploit its I/O in a session, and the real numbers behind its conversion.
The Revolution for Live Events and Workshops: Integrated Sonarworks
Moving from an acoustically treated control room to a hotel room or a conference hall for a masterclass means clashing with problematic acoustics.
The Apollo x8 Gen 2 supports Apollo Monitor Correction in collaboration with Sonarworks. This means I can load room calibration profiles directly into the interface's DSP.
The correction happens at the hardware level, with zero latency, without loading plugins on the DAW's master bus that I might forget to turn off during export. Wherever I am, I have the certainty of hearing a linear response.
Auto-Gain on Unison Preamps: Speed Without Clipping
When I have to quickly mic up a set for a workshop, or when there's a musician in the studio with highly unpredictable dynamics, Auto-Gain makes all the difference.
It automatically sets the optimal input level on multiple channels simultaneously based on the incoming signal. It saves precious time and ensures recordings never clip, allowing you to focus solely on the performance.
Practical Routing: Exploiting All I/O in a Session
When I talk about an "ecosystem", I mean the Apollo x8's ability to handle complex sessions without stuttering. Here is how I use its connections in a typical hybrid tracking and mixing workflow:
The 4 Unison Preamps (Inputs 1-4): The core for tracking. I use them for vocals, guitars (also leveraging the highly convenient front Hi-Z inputs), and overdubs. During a live workshop, 4 mic inputs are perfect for tracking a basic drum kit or an acoustic guitar and vocal setup.
Line Inputs (5-8): Here I return with the signal processed by my outboard gear, or I connect my studio hardware synths directly, keeping the signal pristine.
The 8 Line Outputs: In a hybrid mix, these outputs are vital. I assign them in Studio One via the Pipeline plugin to send individual tracks to physical compressors and EQs, and then record them back into the DAW. During tracking, they become separate sends perfect for feeding the musicians' personal monitoring (headphones).
ADAT and S/PDIF: Digital ports save your life when you need to expand. The ADAT input allows me to connect an external 8-channel preamp to mic an entire drum kit (reaching 12 simultaneous inputs). S/PDIF is super convenient for returning digitally with a Kemper without further conversions, or for sending the master to a dedicated converter.
Tech Specs: The Numbers of Gen 2
Beyond usability, the raw numbers of this Gen 2 justify the leap in quality compared to the past, guaranteeing absolute transparency:
Main Monitor (D/A): This is where the real leap happens. With a massive 130 dB(A) dynamic range and incredibly low harmonic distortion (THD+N) of -127 dB, what comes out of the monitors is the absolute truth of the mix. It becomes essential for making clinical decisions on sub-frequencies or during mastering.
Preamplifiers (A/D): The mic preamps offer immaculate conversion with a dynamic range of 123 dB(A) and a THD of -114 dB. This means the signal enters intact, without adding any audible background noise, even when you push the gain on less sensitive microphones.
Headphone Outputs: The two front outputs, historically a weak point in many competing interfaces, have been upgraded. They reach 126 dB(A) dynamic range and -117 dB THD. Whether you're doing critical listening or sending a click track to a loud drummer, the sound has incredible punch without ever distorting.
