The Ultimate UAD Console Guide: Stop Using Your Apollo Halfway

Many of the kids who attend the VDSS Academy courses make a significant investment: they buy a Universal Audio Apollo, plug it in, open their DAW, and start recording.
The problem is that they immediately close the UAD Console window, treating it as a nuisance or, at best, a simple digital volume knob.
Let's be clear: if you use an UAD Apollo and ignore its Console, you are literally wasting 80% of the potential you paid for.
The UAD Console is more than just a control panel.
It's an exact replica of the workflow of a high-end analog mixing desk, designed to eliminate latency and give you the sound of real hardware before the signal even touches the converter.
In this article, we get down to business and walk you through the UAD Console step by step, transforming your Apollo into the hub of your home studio.
1. The Hidden Magic: The Unison Slot

The top slot in each Console channel is labeled "Unison".
This isn't just a plugin insert. It's a true bridge between hardware and software.
When you insert a preamp emulation (such as the Neve 1073, API Vision, or SSL) into the Unison slot, the software communicates with your sound card's physical preamps and physically alters their analog impedance .
Your Apollo stops being a neutral sound card and starts behaving electrically like the original console.
The microphone or guitar you plug in will "see" the same resistance and load as the physical desk. This radically changes the way transients are captured, and is why vocals recorded through Unison have a weight and three-dimensionality that's impossible to replicate by retrofitting the same plugin into your DAW.
2. The Great Dilemma: UAD REC vs. UAD MON

On the right side of the Console you'll find a crucial switch that always confuses everyone: UAD REC (red) and UAD MON (blue).
This switch decides the fate of plugins inserted into the "Inserts" slots (the ones below Unison).
UAD REC (Record): In this mode, the audio is processed by plugins and output to the WAV file. If you use an 1176 compressor and reduce the vocal by 10 dB, the recorded file will have that compression. There is no undo button.
UAD MON (Monitor): In this mode, you (or the singer in headphones) hear the effect, but the file that is recorded into the DAW is completely “dry,” meaning clean.
My practical advice: Have the courage to use UAD REC . In modern audio engineering, we always postpone all decisions until the mixing stage, accumulating problems.
Treat the Console like real outboard hardware: add some EQ, control the peaks with a compressor during capture, and print the result. You'll have tracks that are already sharp and will almost mix themselves.
IMPORTANT: There is no need to compress/process anything when recording ;)
3. Cue Mix: Zero Latency for the Artist

There's nothing worse for a musician than trying to record while listening to your own voice with the delay caused by your DAW's buffer.
The UAD Console bypasses the computer. Using the Sends section of each channel, you can send the direct microphone signal to the "Cue 1" or "Cue 2" buses.
The artist will hear his voice in real time (sub-millisecond latency).
You can send it a lush reverb using the console's auxiliary returns (Aux 1 and Aux 2), without taxing your computer's CPU and without recording the reverb on the main track. The artist sings much better when they feel immersed in a refined acoustic space.

4. The Fatal Error: Turning Off Monitoring in Your DAW (The Phasing Problem)
There's a classic, I'd say systematic, mistake I see all the time, and it sends singers and producers into a panic. You turn on the track to record in your DAW, open UAD Console to turn up the volume on your headphones, and suddenly your vocals sound "tinny," nasal, as if they're inside a tube, or with an annoying echo effect (slapback delay).
What happened? You're hearing the voice twice.
The first time you listen to it through the UAD Console (in real time, with zero latency). The second time you listen to it through your DAW (with the inevitable milliseconds of delay caused by the computer's buffer).
This tiny time difference between the two signals creates a destructive phase cancellation (comb filtering) effect.
The Golden Rule of Engineering: When using UAD Console to manage headphone listening, you should always turn off software monitoring in your DAW .
For example, in Pro Tools just activate the "Low Latency Monitoring" function.
The DAW should only passively record the file in the background, it should not play the incoming audio.
5. Headphone Routing: Two Independent Listening Options for Two Musicians

One of the most critical situations in a home studio is when you need to record two people at the same time, for example a singer and an acoustic guitarist, each plugged into one of the two front-facing headphone jacks on your Apollo.
The singer will want to hear plenty of vocals, backing tracks, and plenty of reverb. The guitarist will want to hear the click and his instrument at full volume.
If you keep them connected to the Main Mix, you satisfy one and destroy the listening experience of the other.
UAD lets you create two completely separate worlds.
Here is the correct workflow:
Set up physical outputs: Go to the "Cue Outputs" panel (on the right of the Console or in a dedicated pop-up depending on the view).
Undock from Mix: You'll find entries for the physical headphones, HP1 and HP2. By default, the "Source" is set to MIX (they hear what you hear in the control room). Change the source of HP1 to CUE 1 and the source of HP2 to CUE 2 .
Build Mixes: Go back to the input channels. Click on the Sends section. You'll see the small horizontal faders for Cue 1 and Cue 2.
Use the Cue 1 faders to sculpt the balance unique to the singer's headphones.
Use the Cue 2 faders to do the same for the guitarist.
With this setup, the two musicians will have completely independent volumes and mixes (without any latency), and you in the control room will be able to continue listening to your Main Mix on the monitors without interfering with them.
6. Virtual Channels: Routing System Audio

Virtual Channels are perhaps the most underrated feature of the Console.
They allow you to bring audio from your computer (or your DAW) back into the UAD mixer.
What is it used for in practice?
Reference Tracks: You can send Spotify or YouTube audio directly into a Virtual Channel, apply a UAD spectrum analyzer to it, and do on-the-fly A/B comparisons while you produce.
Record PC audio: You can sample audio from a movie or YouTube video by routing it into the Virtual Channels and recording that input into your DAW.
Basic/Click Routing for Cues: You can route the metronome or playback channel from Fender Studio Pro to a specific Virtual Channel, so you can conveniently send it to the musicians’ headphones (via the Cue Sends) without having to listen to it yourself in the control room.
