Vocal Compression In Series: Why a Compressor Alone Ruins Your Voice

The human voice is the instrument with the most extensive and unpredictable dynamic range you'll ever mix. In a single verse, a singer can go from a barely audible whisper to a full-throated scream.


Your job, as a mix engineer, is to take this wild performance and keep it glued to the center of the mix, constantly "in your face" of the listener, without ever letting it lose its emotion or making it sound artificial.


The biggest mistake I see 90% of home studios make? Taking a single compressor, lowering the threshold to an unbelievable level, and forcing it to reduce dynamics by 10 or 15 dB on its own.


Physically, when you ask a single processor to do all this work, the result is disastrous.


The compressor will run out of steam: it will destroy transients, create an annoying “pumping” effect (the volume going up and down unnaturally), and make the vocal sound small, squashed, and two-dimensional.


The engineering solution used on all successful discs is called Serial Compression .


Instead of using a single compressor working at 100%, we use two (or three) working at 30% each, dividing the workload based on their electroacoustic behavior.


Let's see how to build this perfect rig, using free plugins once again to prove that you don't need to spend thousands of euros to get professional sound.


Stage 1: The "Peak Hunter" (FET Compressor)


The first compressor in the chain should not be responsible for raising the overall volume of the voice.


Its sole purpose is to act like a ruthless bouncer: it must intercept sudden peaks in volume (the harshest consonants, the syllables spat out too forcefully) and instantly reduce them, before turning itself off immediately afterwards.

For this job you need an extremely fast compressor, typically a FET (Field Effect Transistor) in the style of the Urei 1176. To stay in the world of free VSTs, we use the excellent Analog Obsession FETish .


  • How to set it up:

    • Ratio: High, 4:1 to 8:1.


    • Attack: As fast as possible. We want the compressor to catch the peak before it escapes.


    • Release: Fast. The compressor should lower the peak and return to zero immediately before the next vowel. (Note: on classic 1176 clones, the numbers are reversed; 7 is fast and 1 is slow. Always pay attention to your plugin's interface.)


    • Gain Reduction: Set the threshold (or raise the input) so that the meter needle doesn't move at all during normal or whispered passages. The needle should only snap down (cutting about 3-5 dB) when the singer screams or experiences an abnormal peak.


At the end of this stage, the vocal still sounds natural, but the uncontrolled peaks have been smoothed out. The signal is now ready for smooth leveling.


Stage 2: The "Leveler" (Opto Compressor)


Now that the sudden peaks are gone, we can focus on the body and consistency of the performance.


We want to take the whispered words and bring them up to the same volume as the louder sung parts, creating the warmth and presence typical of radio voices.

Analog Obsession LALA - FREE Optical LA-2A Compressor

For this job you need a slow, musical, and transparent compressor: an optical (opto) compressor, like the legendary Teletronix LA-2A. You can use the Analog Obsession LALA .


The optical compressor has a smooth ratio (usually around 3:1) and slow, non-linear attack and release times, physically determined by a photoelectric cell (or its digital emulation).


  • How to set it up:

    • There are only two knobs here: Peak Reduction and Gain.

    • Turn down the Peak Reduction knob until the needle starts to move steadily, following the singer's rhythm and breathing smoothly.

    • Try to get a constant Gain Reduction between -2 dB and -4 dB.

    • Unlike the previous stage, here the needle should never snap to zero quickly, but should "dance" softly, keeping the voice always supported by a compression cushion.


Stage 3: The compensation EQ


When you apply series compression, you make the vocal extremely dense and present, but you may notice that it has lost some “air” and brightness, or that the low frequencies have become too fat (amplified proximity effect).


This is perfectly normal. Insert an EQ at the end of this chain to apply a slight roll-off (cut) on the low-mids (e.g., 200-300 Hz) if the vocal sounds boxed, and apply a slight high-shelf boost from 10 kHz onwards to restore the openness and three-dimensionality that the compression has absorbed.

Series compression is the hallmark of a conscious mix engineer.


Using a fast compressor to handle transients (FET) and a slow one to handle body (Opto) allows you to reduce the total dynamic range by 8-10 dB without the listener perceiving any kind of artificial squashing.
